WOMEN
Scavatto has shot at medal

Compiled by Globe Staff, 09/15/2000

WHEN: Sept. 19 (individual), Sept. 21 (team)

US ENTRIES: Janet Dykman, Denise Parker, Karen Scavotto.

FAVORITES:

  • Women's individual: 1. Lee Eun-kyung, South Korea; 2. Alison Williamson, Great Britain; 3. He Ying, China
  • Women's team: 1. South Korea; 2. Germany; 3. Italy.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Karen Scavotto, who's jumped from nowhere to the world top five, has a shot at the first US women's medal since 1988. As usual, the South Koreans will win the most medals.

MEN

WHEN: Sept. 20 (individual), Sept. 22 (team)

US ENTRIES: Butch Johnson, Rod White, Vic Wunderle.

FAVORITES:

  • Men's individual: 1. Lionel Torres, France; 2. Michele Frangilli, Italy; 3. Hong Sung-chil, South Korea
  • Men's team: 1. Italy; 2. South Korea; 3. US.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: With Justin Huish (drugs) off the team this time, the US males won't go double gold again, but a team bronze is reasonable. Look for France's Lionel Torres to strike gold in individual and Italy in the team.
