MEN
Armstrong's back but is wounded
Compiled by Globe Staff, 09/15/2000
WHEN: Sept. 16 (kilo), Sept. 17 (individual pursuit, Olympic sprint), Sept. 19 (team pursuit), Sept. 20 (sprint, points race), Sept. 21 (Madison, Keirin), Sept. 23 (mountain bike cross country), Sept. 26 (road race), Sept. 29 (individual time trial)
US ENTRIES: Lance Armstrong, Marcelo Arrue, Johnny Bairos, Derek Bouchard-Hall, Travis Brown, Jame Carney, Jonas Carney, Dylan Casey, Antonio Cruz, Mariano Friedick, Tyler Hamilton, Erin Hartwell, George Hincapie, David Juarez, Tommy Mulkey, Marty Nothstein, Fred Rodriguez, Christian Vande Velde.
FAVORITES:
- Kilo: 1. Shane Kelly, Australia; 2. Arnaud Tournant, France; 3. Stefan Nimke, Germany

- Team pursuit: 1. Germany; 2. France; 3. Ukraine
- Points: 1. Bruno Risi, Switzerland; 2. Silvio Martinello, Italy; 3. Vasyl Yakoviev, Russia
- Match sprint: 1. Laurent Gane, France; 2. Jens Fiedler, Germany; 3. Florian Rousseau, France
- Madison: 1. Spain; 2. Italy; 3. Germany
- Keirin: 1. Fiedler; 2. Frederic Magne, France; 3. Nothstein
- Road race: 1. Oscar Freire Gomez, Spain; 2. Francesco Casagrande, Italy; 3. Armstrong

- Mountain bike cross-country: 1. Miguel Martinez, France; 2. Bart Jan Brentjens, Netherlands; 3. Michael Rassmussen, Denmark.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR: SuperBikes and a home track produced only two medals for the US males in Atlanta, and since they came up empty at last year's world championships, the expectations are modest. Still, there's a strong chance for the first gold medal since 1984 with Armstrong, the Tour de France victor, in the time trial if his recent back injury doesn't hamper him. And Nothstein, the former world champ who won silver in the match sprint last time, has a good chance in a couple of events. But the French, Germans, and Italians still own the sport.

- Mountain bike cross-country: 1. Alison Sydor, Canada; 2. Marga Fullana, Spain; 3. Dunlap.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR: The French, who won three gold medals in 1996, could grab four this time between the untouchable Felcia Ballanger and Marion Clignet. The Americans didn't come close to making the podium in Atlanta, but they have a fine chance now with Alison Dunlap on the mountain bike plus possibilities in Chris Witty and Erin Veenstra-Mirabella.
