At different ends of the same building, these are attached to the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and the Harvard Museum of Natural History (Agassiz shop). The Peabody has a wide-ranging selection of arts and crafts; the Agassiz has gifts for the earthy set - geodes, crystals, and rubber snakes.
Low end: A scorpion yo-yo with a real scorpion inside ($10.95); complete kits to make chocolate and chewing gum ($10.95), all at the Agassiz. Red dragonflies, spiders, and lizards made from recycled tin, $9 at the Peabody. Hands-on: The Peabody Shop has kits that will help you and your child make crafts like a Hopi Indian-style blanket, Pueblo pottery and beaded masks, Eskimo art and igloos, a Plains Indian tipi, and a Native American sand painting. Appropriate for middle-school age and up, they run $19 to $24.95. Permanent beauty: Safari, Ltd. makes impressive collectibles in series such as the Vanishing Wild, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Smithsonian Institute (for insects), and Carnegie Institute (for dinosaurs). They're currently modeling a new dinosaur on the Kronosaurus skeleton in the natural history museum. All are at the Agassiz and range from $3.95 to $35.
